Topic description

In this topic students are introduced to epidemiological concepts, their use and application to nursing practice. The health of populations will be examined, including the influence of political, environmental, geographic and economic factors.

Educational aims

This topic aims for students to develop an in-depth knowledge of population health and epidemiological concepts and an ability to apply them to their professional practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Justify the value of epidemiological studies to population health
  2. Understand, evaluate and justify the key epidemiological concepts
  3. Apply specialised population health knowledge and principles to their nursing practice
  4. Compare and contrast current demographic health indicators and statistical trends for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people world-wide
