This topic continues to focus on developing and applying skills and knowledge required to provide services to clients who are experiencing communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Content and skill development is addressed through a combination of undertaking aspects of speech pathology practice, working with increased numbers of clients with moderate levels of guidance and support from a speech pathologist clinical educator and participating in clinical skills tutorials. The seven key competencies required for speech pathology practice, and defined by the Competency Based Occupational Standards – Entry Level (CBOS) [SPAA, 2001] document will be targeted. The four core academic abilities will be developed: Reasoning; Professional Communication; Lifelong Learning; and Professional Role.

This topic aims to provide students with opportunities to develop knowledge and practical skills in relation to:

• Speech Pathology management of clients who have communication and/or swallowing difficulties

• The key generic competencies required for speech pathology practice detailed in the COMPASS® (SPA 2006) together with the complementary Academic Abilities of Reasoning, Professional Communication, Lifelong Learning, and Professional Role

• Develop occupational competencies of Assessment, Analysis and Interpretation, Planning Speech Pathology Intervention, Speech Pathology Intervention, Planning, Maintaining and Delivering Speech Pathology Services, Professional, Group and Community Education and Professional Development.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

• Demonstrate minimum competence in the practical skills taught and practised during clinical skills tutorials

• Demonstrate progression in their ability to handle workplace tasks in management of 2-4 client sessions per day, either individually, in pairs, or through a group intervention model

• Demonstrate intermediate level practical skills in the generic professional competencies, academic abilities, and occupational competencies of assessment, analysis and interpretation, planning intervention and intervention

• Take responsibility for implementation of management plans with familiar clients

• Appreciate how theory relates to practice

• Take responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis and general management of a small number of clients presenting with communication and/or swallowing difficulties under a moderate level of guidance by clinical educator

• Independently plan familiar/routine aspects of client management in conjunction with peers and moderate supervision from their clinical educator.
