Topic description
This topic prepares students for their professional experiences. It introduces the expectations of professional behaviour for the teaching profession, including legal and ethical responsibilities. Students are introduced to the expectations for their behaviour and learning during the days of their professional experiences. This lecture series is an essential pre-requisite for placement in school settings.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the professional experience program, its requirements and expectations

  • explain the professional expectations of teachers, including legal and ethical responsibilities, and of them as pre-service teachers when they undertake professional experiences

  • support the transitioning to teaching professional

  • help the students plan for effective learning about teaching while undertaking professional experiences over a sustained period of time (4 weeks)

  • ensure that the students understand how to reflect on their practice and respond to feedback on their performance
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the professional experience program and its requirements

  • recognise the legal and ethical responsibilities they will assume as they enter the teaching profession

  • transition into the role of teaching professional

  • demonstrate awareness of the many factors that will contribute to successful professional experiences

  • demonstrate reflective teacher practice with the guidance of a registered teacher
