Topic description

This topic will focus on the complex ethical dilemmas, legal issues and professional requirements that exist as a psychology professional. Students will be trained to conduct intake assessments and to identify and intervene in ethically complex situations. Contemporary issues relating to psychological practice will be considered, including record keeping, mandatory reporting, legal obligations when operating under funding schemes (e.g. Medicare, NDIS); as well as professional development issues such as self-care, self-reflection, and proactive use of supervision and peer consultation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Familiarise students with the complex ethical, legal and professional practice issues that exist in professional psychology practice
  • Prepare students to manage their continuing professional development including self-reflection on their own practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply the APS Code of Ethics across a range of contexts
  2. Conduct professional intake interviews including risk assessments
  3. Engage in self-reflection and consultation to evaluate the impact of their own values and beliefs on the therapeutic process, and the effectiveness of their professional practice
