Topic description
Applied research skills to locate, critically evaluate and apply research are essential to practice as an evidence-based psychologist. This topic will equip students with an understanding of the practical aspects of research most relevant to practicing psychologists. The focus will be on extending student’s research skills in interpreting and evaluating research literature to ensure that they are equipped to use the best available evidence when making decisions regarding the assessment and treatment of clients. Students will also be introduced to methodologies to collate and evaluate their own outcomes and to report research findings. Ethical considerations and other issues related to applied research will also be considered.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to provide an understanding of the role of research in psychological practice; and to provide students with the skills to use research to inform the delivery of evidence based assessment and intervention.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Conduct literature searches and reviews

  2. Critically evaluate published research

  3. Apply relevant research to psychological practice

  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the research process in an applied setting.
