Topic description

This topic will familiarise students with the theories and methods of assessment in professional psychology. This is a practical topic in which students will develop proficiency in the selection, administration, scoring and interpretation of a range of standardised tests commonly administered in psychology practice. This will include child and adult intelligence tests, achievement tests, memory tests, personality tests, and tests of clinical and mental health. Students will acquire skills in integrating information from multiple sources and professional report writing. Issues related to assessment in special populations and diverse groups will also be considered.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop an understanding of the issues related to test selection, use, interpretation, acceptability and appropriateness
  • Develop practical skills in the administration, scoring and interpretation of standardised psychological tests
  • Develop skills in integrating assessment information and communicating results to diverse client groups
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the approaches to psychological assessment across the lifespan
  2. Evaluate the cultural, ethical and psychometric considerations associated with standardised assessments
  3. Administer, score and interpret standardised assessments
  4. Accurately and appropriately communicate results of standardised assessments both verbally and in writing
