Topic description

This topic will introduce students to a range of presentations that arise across the lifespan, and the unique challenges that can be presented within diverse client groups and professional settings. The distinct issues associated with working with people of different ages, gender, cultural backgrounds and complex psychological presentations will be considered. Theory and skills training for relevant therapeutical modalities will be provided. The topic will also introduce students to frameworks for psychological practice across a range of workplace environments and therapy delivery modes.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to the diversity of psychological practice
  • Provide knowledge and skills in selected areas related to specific population groups and settings
  • Enhance awareness of cultural and individual differences, and professional and ethical issues
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Diagnose common presentations across the lifespan based on the DSM-5 classification system
  2. Critically evaluate different treatment modalities across the lifespan, diverse populations, and organisational settings
  3. Identify and plan appropriate evidence-based interventions for various presenting issues across the lifespan and diverse groups
  4. Apply evidence-based therapeutic techniques across the lifespan, and in a culturally responsive manner across socially and culturally diverse populations, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
  5. Communicate psychological knowledge to clients and multidisciplinary professionals in culturally responsive manner
