Topic description
Mathematics education reform literature shows clearly that a thorough understanding of both mathematics and pedagogy is necessary for teaching it well. This topic builds on the background experiences and understandings of students, whether they are positive or negative. Students will have the opportunity to develop conceptual understanding of key mathematics concepts by experiencing contemporary approaches to mathematics teaching and learning. This topic emphasises both mathematical content and pedagogies. Activities in workshops and on school visits are intended to increase a mathematical knowledge base for primary teaching, but they also focus on principles of instruction and assessment.
Educational aims
This topic will:

  • explore attitudes and beliefs associated with mathematics education

  • examine the mathematical concepts, knowledge and understandings essential for effective teaching of mathematics in the primary years

  • critique assessment approaches associated with mathematics education
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic pre-service teachers will be able to:

  • demonstrate deep understanding of the concepts that underpin mathematical knowledge

  • develop a philosophy of teaching and learning mathematics

  • analyse the difference between and importance of both conceptual and procedural knowledge in understanding and teaching mathematics

  • critique a range of pedagogical approaches used for teaching primary mathematics

  • collect and analyse data concerning students' mathematical problem-solving abilities

  • plan and evaluate a mathematics unit for primary students

  • critique forms of assessment used in mathematics education.
