This Topic provides experiential learning in the form of a ‘living case study’ that requires students to report on a strategic business issue of a publicly listed company/government owned entity or a not-for-profit entity.

This topic provides students with the opportunity to integrate the practical management tools, techniques and skills learned throughout the MBA Course. Students are encouraged to develop creative and practical strategies to deal with the identified case issues, drawing on their experience, and requiring the application of practical research skills to gather material relevant to the identified strategies or issues.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
  • This Topic focuses on experiential learning by providing candidates with the opportunity to prepare a ‘living case study’ report on a strategic business issue using a publicly listed company/government owned entity or a not-for-profit entity identified by the Topic coordinator.
  • This is a Capstone’ Topic that aims to provide candidates with the opportunity to integrate the practical management tools, techniques and skills learned throughout the MBA Course.
  • Candidates will use a case study approach to develop outcome oriented strategies to address a specific strategic objective or provide strategic alternatives to address designated problems specified by the Topic coordinator. The analysis integrates all aspects of the strategic management process developed in prior Topics to inculcate practical skills into graduates as work-ready managers.
  • The Topic encourages candidates to develop creative and practical strategies to deal with the identified case issues. This will not only draw upon their experience, but will require synthesis of sometimes complex issues faced by the entity both in the internal and external environments. This will entail the application of practical research skills to gather material relevant to the identified strategies or issues.
  • The Topic provides formative milestone activities to prepare candidates for the task, review progress toward, and the achievement of, the learning outcomes.
  • Finally, the Topic aims at providing candidates with the experience of producing a compelling final report, together with the design of a professional presentation, designed to secure senior management ‘buy-in’ to the proposed recommendations and/or actions.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of this topic the candidate will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental principles of strategic management learned in the MBA Course and apply those principles to a living capstone case.
  • Identify, research, analyse and synthesise internal and external information and issues about a living entity, and develop strategic recommendations for presentation to a senior management audience.
  • Communicate practical management strategies and actions to address complex business issues in an appropriate, effective and persuasive manner.
  • Recognise, reflect, and respond to sustainability and ethical issues likely to arise in a professional management context.
  • Utilise the experiential learning outcomes to support personal and professional development.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, including verbal and written communication skills, evidenced through a final report and presentation to senior management.
