Topic description
This topic provides opportunities for students to plan, construct, implement and evaluate effective curriculum for students of history and geography in primary years R - 7 in two key curriculum frameworks: (1) The Australian Curriculum and (2) The International Baccalaureate.

The topic expects students to: critically appraise current curriculum frameworks; understand the nature of history and geography as distinct disciplines; practice modes of planning for the effective teaching of history and geography; develop specific pedagogical skills for creative content and skills delivery and instruction; apply interdisciplinary approaches; and effectively evaluate student learning through formative and summative means.

Students are expected to apply theory to practice and to prepare a major Unit of Work that complements their school based practicum experience.
Educational aims
That pre-service teachers:

  • will develop an in-depth understanding of the methodology of teaching history and geography R-7

  • will be able to apply current research findings in a variety of relevant and innovative history and geography teaching methods and resources

  • will develop the ability to use inclusive teaching practices when planning for teaching and learning in the history and geography
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate complex understandings about the teaching and learning of history and geography including recent developments in those fields

  • engage with scholarly works on the teaching and learning of history and geography R-7 and critically analyse and evaluate the Australian Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate curriculum frameworks

  • demonstrate technical and creative capacities to construct curriculum Units of Work of an appropriate length and complexity for history, geography and integrated Humanities R-7

  • apply theoretical and technical knowledge gained during this topic to in situ practicums in primary schools

  • justify teaching and learning approaches in history geography and integrated Humanities based on rigorous research and demonstrate communication skills aimed at professional, academic and lay audiences.
