Topic description
Supervised research on an approved subject relating to international law or international relations, leading to the writing of a dissertation of around 9,000 words. The dissertation should provide evidence of the student's ability to collect and evaluate information; construct, test and defend an argument; and critically examine theories and empirical trends in the area of academic enquiry.
Educational aims
The Educational aims of the topic are to:

  • provide students with an opportunity to undertake supervised research and write a dissertation of up to 9,000 words in length

  • enable students to provide evidence of ability to collect and evaluate information; construct, test and defend an argument; and critically examine theories and empirical trends in the area of academic enquiry
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:

  • engage in advanced-level academic and professional analysis of issues and problems in international law and/or international relations according to the research topic selected

  • be informed about the state of the academic literature and legal and/or political practice with respect to the selected range of issues

  • demonstrate research skills in an area of academic study in which they have an interest

  • apply effective and independent study skills

  • apply developed skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing
