Topic description

Research on an approved subject relating to international law or international relations, leading to the writing of a research paper. The research paper should provide evidence of the student's ability to collect and evaluate information; construct, test and defend an argument; and critically examine theories and empirical trends in the area of academic enquiry. The research paper will normally be internally assessed.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with an opportunity to undertake research and write a research paper of up to 9,000 words in length
  • Enable students to provide evidence of ability to collect and evaluate information; construct, test and defend an argument; and critically examine theories and empirical trends in the area of academic enquiry
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Engage in advanced-level academic and professional analysis of issues and problems in international law and/or international relations according to the research topic selected
  2. Be informed about the state of the academic literature and legal and/or political practice with respect to the selected range of issues
  3. Demonstrate research skills in an area of academic study in which they have an interest
  4. Apply effective and independent study skills
  5. Apply developed skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing
