Topic description
This topic aims to help the student understand the roles played by public health and primary health care practitioners in acting for change on the social determinants of health. It aims to enhance the students' ability to fulfil such roles competently and effectively. By the end of this topic, students should be better able to: analyse and critique initiatives for change undertaken by individuals, groups or organisations; address the tasks required in program planning; and understand the relevance of contemporary approaches to public health and primary health care.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to develop their capacity to apply an understanding of the social determinants of health to practicing primary health care in a range of settings. This topic focuses on the practice of working with individuals, groups and communities to bring about change in order to improve health and wellbeing. It provides opportunities for students to acquire knowledge about theories and concepts associated with power and empowerment and their critiques, examine and analyse frameworks used by practitioners to bring about change and appraise examples of practice that employ such frameworks.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • discuss critically theories of 'power' and 'empowerment' inherent in primary health care approaches concerned with bringing about change for individuals, groups and communities

  • identify models of primary health care practice that employ the concept of empowerment and their critiques

  • analyse examples of practice in terms of the ways in which they apply critically and effectively the theories and concepts associated with empowerment

  • demonstrate a practical knowledge of the range of skills required in applying frameworks for bringing about change in community settings
