Topic description

In this topic students will develop specialised knowledge of the use of a range of individual and group counselling models, including knowledge of counselling tools to support their practice in a variety of mental health settings.

Educational aims

This topic aims to develop advanced knowledge of:

  • Theories that underpin counselling and group work in mental health nursing
  • The relationship between language, communication and culture in the practices of counselling and group work in the context of mental health nursing
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically examine the theoretical basis of a range of psychotherapies and models of counselling
  2. Explore the principles of individual and group work when working with people experiencing mental health issues
  3. Discuss therapeutic interventions to effectively deliver counselling and group work in a mental health setting
  4. Debate the issues of ethical, racial, cultural, religious and gender sensitivity in counselling and group work
  5. Articulate the importance of reflective practice in mental health nursing and understand the benefits of ongoing clinical supervision
  6. Investigate the potential challenges of counselling people individually and in group work when working in mental health nursing
