Topic description
This topic will provide students with an understanding of the processes of consultation and counselling within the context of the education of children with special needs. It will also help students acquire the skills necessary for developing effective helping relationships with a particular focus on a collaborative approach to the exploration and resolution of educational questions with teachers, administrators, children and their families.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • examine the techniques, practices and skills essential to effective collaborative consultation within the context of the education of children with special needs

  • provide an overview of and evaluate models of collaborative consultation
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • describe the role of collaborative consultation in the provision of special education services

  • identify the strengths and weaknesses of models of collaborative consultation

  • identify factors that can affect the outcomes of the collaborative consultation process

  • discuss important considerations related to collaboration with school personnel, other professionals, paraeducators and families
