Topic description

This topic involves a detailed examination of the issues faced by organisations concerned with the effective management of employees in order to satisfy the needs of the organisation and the individual. The focus will be on increasing professionals' understanding of the theories, issues and influences on Human Resource Management and Human Resource Planning. Staffing the restructured workplace, ensuring the effective management of human resources, managing employee relations, accountability, international human resource management, and future directions will be discussed. Areas such as recruitment, supervision, job analysis, industrial relations, career development, performance management and quality of life issues are covered in these discussions.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of various theories, issues, and HR management through class discussions, assignments and activities, that require them to reflect on their beliefs about the role of HRM in meeting the goals of the organisation and responding to a highly competitive workplace
  2. Use problem-solving techniques to frame, analyse and resolve problems related to Strategic Human Resource Management
  3. Demonstrate their ability to initiate, and engage in critical thinking and debate related to the management of human resources
  4. Identify and critique a variety of theories of HRM
  5. Examine his/her professional code of ethics and values as they relate to the role of a Human Resource Manager
  6. Demonstrate their ability to apply appropriate management techniques and group processes in the planning and delivery of a group presentation
  7. Use appropriate interpersonal skills during class interactions, small group activities and completing a group assignment
