Students are expected to have completed the first year of FT study (or equivalent) and/or to bring a substantial knowledge of the relevant area of research to the project.
Topic description
This topic is designed to enable students to further explore identified areas of interest arising out of the theoretical and research literature in educational management. In each case students must indicate the ability to work independently, and demonstrate mastery of the literature in an area of educational leadership and management.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with the opportunity to produce a piece of research that is a substantial and creditable piece of work

  • work unaided to produce an original study

  • produce an independent exploration of a topic of special relevance to the student

  • develop theory or/and the application of existing theory to a specific context
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will demonstrate:

  • critical knowledge of literature and research methodology relevant to the area of focus
  • developing skills and knowledge required to carry out independent research whilst self monitoring and self directing their learning
  • an integrated understanding of the key elements of the research process including: research problems, literature reviews, research questions and collecting and analysing data
