Topic description
This topic will provide students with an opportunity to develop a critical perspective on such issues as legal ethics, professionalism, justice access, and the role of law and lawyers in society in the context of legal practice.
Participation in authentic and/or simulated activities and feedback on their involvement will help students to reflect on, assess and learn from their own performance.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- Give students the opportunity to examine the operation of law in society and issues of access to justice
- Place in an authentic context the law (including procedural law) that students have been studying
- Develop an understanding of issues that are central to being a lawyer
- Further develop the practice of self-reflection
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Explain ideas about professionalism, access to justice, self-awareness, and how the law can be used to solve authentic problems
- Evaluate the role of lawyers in promoting justice and in service to the community while exercising professional judgment in the context of clinical legal education
- Critique complex legal issues through legal reasoning and research to generate appropriate jurisprudential and practical responses to legal issues in the context of clinical legal education
- Combine sophisticated cognitive and creative skills with critical analysis when approaching legal issues and make reasoned and appropriate choices amongst alternatives in the context of clinical legal education
- Justify and interpret theoretical propositions, legal methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions in addition to identifying, researching, evaluating and synthesising relevant factual, legal and policy issues in the context of clinical legal education using intellectual and practical skills
- Discuss legal issues in effective, appropriate, and persuasive ways for legal and non-legal audiences using various communication methods in the context of clinical legal education while working both collaboratively and with a high level of autonomy, accountability and professionalism
