Topic description

This topic follows on from EDUC9761 Approaches to Research. The topic examines and critiques a range of quantitative and qualitative research designs and their methods. The research designs covered include survey, correlational, experimental, ethnographic, grounded theory, narrative, mixed methods and action research.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Gain an understanding of a range of research designs and their application to different research problems
  • Critique these research designs
  • Explore and critique critique different research methods
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and describe a variety of research designs, their similarities and differences, and arguments for and against the use of each design
  2. Compare and contrast the appropriateness of different research designs for particular research problems
  3. Critique the use of different research designs
  4. Describe and critique the use of different research methods
