Topic description

This topic provides students with opportunities for work experience within government and non-government agencies, businesses and other workplaces with a focus on some aspect relevant to the environment. The scope of 'environment' in these placements is broadly defined. Students will engage with their assigned local and/or interstate hosts to varying extents, including observation and shadowing, performing authentic workplace tasks under supervision, and preparing reports and presentations, depending on the agency.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with the principles of good professional practice within a workplace context
  • Offer students opportunities for work experience within agencies and other organisations relevant to their environmental discipline
  • Broaden student perspectives on the nature of work opportunities within environmental disciplines
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Discuss the breadth of issues and topic areas relevant to work and careers in the environmental arena
  2. Understand the policy, fiscal and/or commercial contexts in which environmental matters arise or are dealt with
  3. Apply professional skills gained elsewhere in the program to a workplace context
  4. Apply their knowledge to the ethical issues that relate to selected workplaces
  5. Engage professionally with host institutions including national, state and local government agencies, non-government organisations and private enterprise
