Topic description
This topic focuses on the theoretical perspectives and practice strategies associated with differentiating teaching and learning. Teaching strategies designed to support student learning in the MYP for students with learning difficulties and gifted students will be addressed. The processes involved in the differentiation of assessment for students with special education needs will be examined, and teaching, learning and assessment of second language learners will also be considered.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • acquire an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of differentiating teaching and learning
  • explore teaching strategies appropriate to supporting the learning needs of all students in the IBMYP
  • consider the specific teaching and learning strategies appropriate for students with special educational needs
  • examine the processes for assessing students with special educational needs in the IBMYP
  • consider the key aspects associated with teaching, learning and assessment of second language learners
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will:

  • Utilise key principles of inclusion and effective differentiation
  • Implement principles and theory of differentiation to reflect a range of teaching and learning practices in the IB context
  • Design and implement differentiated learning tasks suitable for a diverse range of students within an IBMYP classroom, including special needs, gifted and second-language learners
  • Design and implement processes for assessing students with specific educational needs in the IBMYP
