Topic description
  1. Electrostatic fields: Coulomb’s law, electric field intensity, electric flux density, Gauss' law, energy and potential, capacitors, Poisson's and Laplace's equations
  2. Magnetostatic fields: Biot-Savart Law, Ampere's circuital law, Stokes' theorem, magnetic flux density, magnetic force, boundary conditions
  3. Time-varying fields: Faraday's law, displacement current, Maxwell's equations
  4. Applications: transformers, wave propagation, transmission lines, rotating electric machines
Educational aims
  1. To develop a fundamental understanding of the theory of electromagnetic fields
  2. To introduce the theory and practice of common electromagnetic devices
  3. To develop problem solving skills, including computational skills
  4. To develop experimental skills
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental laws that govern electromagnetic fields
  2. Describe the construction, principles of operation and application of common electromagnetic devices
