Topic description
  1. Electrostatic fields: Coulomb's law, electric field intensity, electric flux density, Gauss' law, energy and potential, capacitors, Poisson's and Laplace's equations
  2. Magnetostatic fields: Biot-Savart Law, Ampere's circuital law, Stokes' theorem, magnetic flux density, magnetic force, boundary conditions
  3. Time-varying fields: Faraday's law, displacement current, Maxwell's equations
  4. Applications: transformers, wave propagation, transmission lines, rotating electric machines

This topic aims to:

  • Develop a fundamental understanding of the theory of electromagnetic fields
  • To introduce the theory and practice of common electromagnetic devices
  • Develop problem solving skills, including computational skills
  • Develop experimental skills
