Topic description

The Language Research Project is a required component of the Master in Language Studies. The project offers students opportunities to extend further previous knowledge in the broad field of language studies, cultural studies or linguistics (French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek or Spanish). Students will be required to undertake independent research on a topic to be negotiated with their supervisor.

Educational aims

The topic aims to:

  • Develop advanced independent research skills in a specialised area of Language Studies/Cultural Studies
  • Develop students' skills in critically investigating and analysing information, and synthesising results of empirical research
  • Develop further students' skills in language proficiency/cultural studies at an expert level
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply theoretical propositions to an appropriate research methodology, as part of an extended research project
  2. Demonstrate mastery in carrying out research in a specialised area, including the analysis of complex ideas and/or data
  3. Communicate complex ideas and concepts, both verbally and in writing, to a range of audiences
