Topic description
This topic introduces candidates to the relationship between research and the profession. The principal aim of this topic is to develop the researcher as inquirer within the context of their professional activity. The focus in this topic is on the researcher’s standpoint, the professional context and the research literature. Candidates will develop skills in locating their work within a particular research tradition, and develop proficiency in using theory and theory development. Candidates are guided to integrate their learning within their own professional and research context.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop an awareness of academic protocol and tradition in the field of research;

  • build research discipline awareness;

  • build a philosophical awareness of research design;

  • develop a theoretical awareness and proficiency in one theoretical approach;

  • establish the capacity to consider a social and educational issue and refine it as a research issue;

  • develop the links between academic research and professional practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • name and explain the implications of different epistemological standpoints in research design and analysis;

  • name and explain their preferred research discipline and its implications for their research directions;

  • name a range of different theoretical frameworks in their field and clearly articulate a preferred theoretical approach for their research directions;

  • integrate and apply the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge that are required to progress education policy, management and practice;

  • utilise knowledge gained of research principles and methods in order to conceptualise and communicate original research ideas that makes an original and sustained contribution to knowledge in education policy, management and practice;

  • demonstrate an advanced understanding of the politics and ethics of education policy, and the role of research and management in professional practice;

  • demonstrate the ability to write and speak about their disciplinary, epistemological and theoretical approach for a research interest related to the education profession.
