This topic is designed to enable students to develop areas of interest arising out of the theoretical research literature in education. In each case students must indicate the ability to work independently and demonstrate mastery of the literature in an area of education. Students are expected to develop a research proposal and to investigate the literature on their chosen topic in order to show its strengths and limitations.

This topic aims to enable students to:

• develop areas of interest arising out of the theoretical and research literature in education. A range of activities is permissible.
• work independently and explore a topic of particular relevance to their specific context.
• produce a substantial and credible paper that displays their knowledge and critical analysis of the area upon which they are focusing

On completing this topic students will demonstrate:

• the ability to work independently
• a capacity for self-monitoring and self-directed learning
• an extensive, critical knowledge of the research and theory relevant to their area of focus
• the ability to develop a research proposal that demonstrates a high level of academic rigour and expression
