Topic description
This topic is designed to enable students to develop areas of interest arising out of the theoretical and research literature in education. A range of activities is permissible. The coursework project should be a substantial and convincing piece of work which displays the student's knowledge and abilities in their best light. Students may analyse and evaluate the literature in order to show its strengths and limitations or its application to current educational practice. In each case students must indicate their ability to work independently and demonstrate mastery of the literature in their chosen area of education. Assessment is based on a final report of 9,000 words.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with an opportunity to explore in depth an area of interest within the field of education that could not be undertaken within the framework of an existing coursework topic
  • enable students to work independently on topics related to the theoretical and research literature in this area
  • enable students to demonstrate mastery of the literature in an area of education
  • facilitate the development of a level of academic achievement consistent with post graduate standards
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a capacity for independent, self-directed learning
  • demonstrate mastery of the literature in an area of education
  • analyse and evaluate literature in order to show its strengths and limitations
  • examine the possible uses or implications of the literature which could involve discussion of how the implications might be tested, how the literature might be used in education practice, or how the literature might apply to the analysis and understanding of particular problem areas
  • demonstrate a level of academic achievement consistent with post graduate standards
