BIOL1112 Biology and Society

The topic covers selected aspects of biology that relate to impacts on modern society. Each week will consist of interactive, concept-based lectures and discussion, focusing on the science, impacts and ethics of a current global issue. Flinders lecturers along with selected guest lecturers will discuss the scientific and social perspectives of each issue and will allow students to challenge these concepts and reflect on their own understanding.

This topic aims to allow students to better interpret and debate relevant topical events confronting the world today, by explaining the biology behind each event. Issues covered will be of the following nature:

• Ecological
• Medical
• Molecular
• Environmental
• Forensic
• Evolutionary

1. Appreciate how evidence is used in a scientific argument
2. Understand ecological systems and molecular biology to interpret issues that have a biological basis and the social context in which these issues developed
3. Develop a range of generic skills including assignment writing, team building and reflective practice
