Topic description

This topic introduces students to the study of discourse and communication from a linguistic and semiotic perspective. It provides an overview of the contemporary theories of communication and discourse analysis and looks at ways people create and interpret meaning in linguistic and visual texts in a variety of media.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop understanding of major theories in communication and discourse studies
  • Encourage ability to use linguistic terminology to analyse media texts in terms of their communication techniques
  • Provide training in methods and techniques of discourse analysis
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Examine discourse, communication theory and semiotics through an analysis of various linguistic and visual texts
  2. Discuss the role of language in persuasive texts produced by different media
  3. Adapt theoretical knowledge of the functioning of language to contemporary life situations
