Topic description

This topic is a chance for you to learn a broad 3D skillset, while also allowing experienced 3D students the opportunity to expand and consolidate their skills. The topic is a mix of practical exercises, 3d theory and self-directed, but guided, major projects. The exercises will be taught across a mix of software and you will be encouraged to use the most appropriate software for your skill level. The teaching, however, will be primarily focused in Autodesk Maya for the weekly workshops. Workshops will cover modelling, animation, texturing, lighting, rendering as well as generation of plates for realistic CG using HDR lighting. Class workshops and demonstrations will also include elements of acquisition techniques, filming, and asset creation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Expand students understanding of the working of the 3D and Visual Effects industry, and expose them to a broad range of 3D media concepts
  • Develop students’ understanding of the technical and creative aspects of 3D work, by developing their skills in an area of previous 3D media study, or exposing them to a new field of 3D production
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate familiarity with the principal concepts of modelling for 3D games, animation and visual effects, either collectively or separately, as it applies to industry standards
  2. Demonstrate the use of a basic vocabulary relevant to understanding and practice in modelling for 3D games, animation and visual effects
  3. Demonstrate the ability to analyse a range of modelling for 3D games, animation and visual effects concepts and applications
