INDG3001 Colonial Intimacies and the Economy: Mathematics of Genocide

This topic will critically examine the intimacies of colonialism, particularly in relation to Indigenous people and ideas of humanness. Students will consider colonialism through an analysis of colonial expansion, settlement, cultural genocide, drawing on archival records and artefacts of representation of 'race' as a justification of land dispossession of Indigenous peoples. A focus of the history of domestic servitude/labour, the economy and data collection will be examined through an analysis of social policy in relation to Indigenous people within Australia. Students will engage with Indigenous responses to these colonial processes.

This topic will draw on Indigenous Creative arts expressions and privilege Indigenous Knowledges and perspectives to critically consider, analyse and articulate Indigenous futures, through an arts-based pedagogy.

This topic aims to:

• Critically examine the intimacies of colonialism through understandings of colonial archives and embodied Indigenous responses
• Analyse knowledge production in its broadest philosophical sense to inform contemporary contexts in colonised spaces globally

1. Evaluate social policy, data sets, record keeping applied to Indigenous Australian people
2. Consider colonial expansion and land dispossession
3. Examine Indigenous indentured labour history
4. Consider what might ethical responsibility mean in the aftermath of attempted genocide
