Topic description

In this topic, students reflect and apply the principles of professional conduct as they transition to become a registered nurse. Students will explore their understanding of legal, ethical, socio-political, cultural and professional factors that impact on practice, to identify approaches to establish and maintain their professional integrity, conduct and ethical decision making.

Educational aims

This topic aims to identify the complexity of ethical problems in professional practice and to demonstrate the ability to use moral reasoning in developing solutions according to ethical standards. Students will appraise the impact of social, political, cultural, environmental and legal considerations on the role of the Registered Nurse. The concepts of clinical governance, leadership and supervision are further developed in relation to the Registered Nurse role.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Discuss issues relating to social, political, cultural, environmental, ethical and legal considerations for the professional nurse within the context of a multidisciplinary team
  2. Interpret legal and ethical standards that are associated with evidence-based and person centred nursing care of vulnerable clients
  3. Formulate strategies to respond to factors that negatively impact on patient- and self-advocacy, with focus on challenges to the autonomy of the nurse and the patient, and legal and moral conflict in the workplace relating to the quality of care and protection of patients
  4. Evaluate the importance of continual reflection in person centred quality and safe provision of care
