Topic description

This topic delves into the impacts of living longer through consideration of the wide-reaching implications and opportunities specific to an ageing population. Environmental, social, cultural, political and personal influences on economic behaviour and wellbeing of older people will be investigated. National and international economic indicators such as population distribution, productivity, workforce participation, retirement, superannuation, housing, health and aged care will also be explored. Prior knowledge of economics is not assumed.

Educational aims

This topic aims to introduce students to key economic implications and opportunities associated with an ageing population. Students will develop an understanding of factors that support or impede the economic wellbeing of older Australians and the communities in which they age.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to:

  1. Examine the economic impacts and opportunities associated with an ageing population
  2. Identify key enablers and barriers to economic wellbeing in later life
  3. Critically evaluate economic based policies and systems relevant to older Australians
