Topic description
In an increasingly globalised world, “Global Connections” allows students to immerse themselves in a dynamic new culture, gain first-hand knowledge of an international business environment and forge valuable global connections and networks. Students will interact with peers, stakeholders and leaders in an international innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem whilst, at the same time, identifying the opportunities and challenges of conducting successful business and developing their capacity to craft effective strategies to capture opportunities for successful global ventures.
Educational aims
This immersive topic challenges students to think globally and operate across boundaries, whether geographical, cultural or sectoral. The topic will develop in students an appreciation of alternative cultures, markets and innovation systems. Students will broaden their perspectives, deepen their knowledge and learn the value of international networks. Students will gain an appreciation of the culture of the country (or countries) visited, build an understanding of the opportunities and challenges of conducting successful business in other countries, gain insights into launching successful global ventures and develop networks and connections in another country to further career opportunities, post-study.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • Appreciate and articulate the benefits of study and travel in the country (or countries) visited
  • Recognise and understand the implications of cultural differences in innovation and technology utilisation in another country or (countries)
  • Demonstrate awareness of major social and political issues relating to the country visited and their impact on innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems and success
  • Consider how to apply the knowledge gained from topics studied in unfamiliar contexts
  • Value connections across boundaries and initiate new networks
