Topic description

This topic explores contemporary issues in secondary schooling. The areas examined include models of secondary schooling, the role of secondary schooling a changing world, the transition of secondary students from adolescents to young adults, the post-compulsory secondary years. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to explore their role as a teacher-researcher in the area of secondary schooling.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Investigate the key concepts associated with secondary schooling
  • Consider the roles and challenges involved in being a secondary schooling teacher
  • Examine secondary schooling models and curriculum frameworks, and post-compulsory secondary schooling options
  • Consider self efficacy and the role of research in forming and informing the secondary years educator and secondary schooling
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of unique needs of secondary students in their transition from adolescence to young adulthood
  2. Reflect upon and make considered judgements about the significance of secondary schooling in a changing world
  3. Articulate an appreciation of the importance of schooling options for students in the post-compulsory years
  4. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the roles and challenges associated with being a secondary schooling teacher
