Topic description

This topic presents a functional approach to structure of the human musculoskeletal system and the control of movement. The syllabus includes anatomy of human bones, joints, ligaments and muscles together with neuroanatomy related to the control of posture and movement.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the structural and functional anatomy of the human musculoskeletal system and the sensorimotor pathways involved in control of human movement.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the basic structure and function of the human musculoskeletal system
  2. Describe the main sensorimotor pathways of the nervous system involved in the control of the musculoskeletal system
  3. Apply knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and its neural control to describe normal function
