Topic description
This topic addresses the principles of pharmacology and toxicology. It is divided into four modules that provide a theoretical and conceptional framework that underpins the study of drugs and chemicals in humans; (i) how drugs and toxic chemicals are handled by the body (pharmaco/toxicokinetics), (ii) what they do to the body (pharmaco/toxicodynamics), (iii) how they cause adverse effects, and (iv) the processes of drug discovery, development, regulation, and risk assessment.
Educational aims
To provide students with an understanding of the theoretical and conceptional framework that underpins the use of drugs and the toxicity of xenobiotics.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students must be able to have an:

  • understanding of pharmacokinetic and toxicokinetic principles, including the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion.

  • understanding of pharmacodynamic and toxicodynamic principles, including molecular targets, chemical-target interactions, and concentration-response relationships.

  • understanding of how drugs and chemicals cause adverse effects.

  • awareness of the processes of drug discovery, development, regulation and risk assessment.
