Topic description
This topic presents methods with reference to research paradigms and contemporary and historical, social and political contexts. It encourages students to critically engage with the practical, ethical and theoretical implications of a range of established and emergent qualitative and quantitative methods, and to think creatively about the possibilities of those methods and data generated for their own research.
Educational aims
This topic aims to strengthen students’ theoretical understanding and practical application of research paradigms and methods, to build their ability to undertake rigorous and creative research.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Evaluate the implications of using specific research paradigms and methods in the design and implementation of research

  2. Analyse the social and political context of research

  3. Determine research paradigms and methods that are appropriate for their proposed Honours research projects
