Topic description

This topic provides a grounding in research methods for creative artists in creative writing, dance, drama, visual arts, screen production, digital media, fashion, and visual effects and entertainment design.

Issues relating to practice-led research and related creative arts methodologies will be explored, including the organisation and communication of creative research outcomes and the relationship between theory and practice. Participants will acquire cross-disciplinary skills and knowledge while preparing for their own major creative project (Honours thesis).

Participants will deepen their understanding of how to construct a creative arts practice-led research project, including research proposals, methodologies and methods, literature and artefact reviews, ethics and evaluation processes.

Educational aims
This topic aims to deepen participants’ skills and knowledge in research methods in the creative and performing arts, enabling participants to deepen their methodological knowledge and to develop the skills to effectively undertake and complete their Honours thesis.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop and sustain a research methodology applicable to their area of specialisation, including understanding the principles of ethical research
  2. Critically evaluate research theories
  3. Model research at a high level via oral and written communication/assessment using advanced critical writing skills
  4. Defend the research proposal prepared for their Honours thesis
