This topic has three areas of focus: low vision, occupational optometry, business aspects of optometry and research project.

The low vision teaching covers the following content areas:

• Measuring visual performance

• Multidisciplinary approaches to low vision care

• Strategies for improving visual performance

• Aids for field loss

• Training patients

The occupational optometry teaching covers the following content areas:

• Australian standards for optical devices

• Vision standards for differing professions

• Visual performance and efficiency in the workplace

• Performing workplace site inspections

• Writing professional reports

As part of the occupational optometry intensive students will break into groups and visit varied workplaces and perform assessments.

All areas of practice management will be covered:

• Retail operations

• Marketing

• Human resource management

• Financial management

This topic builds on the fundamental optometry knowledge and skills students have acquired in preceding semesters. Coupled with continued clinical training, this topic enables the building of advanced skills and knowledge in the areas of low vision, and occupational optometry. This will empower students to engage broadly in low vision assessment and management including in multi-disciplinary care. Students will study occupational optometry and learn how to plan, organise occupational health and safety assessments of workplaces and write relevant reports. In the latter two intensives of the semester, students will undertake further group work on their research project finalising their datasets and drafting manuscripts for journal submission. An intensive covering business and management aspects of optometry will be conducted in the last week of the semester.

At the completion of this topic, students would be expected to:

1. Have an in depth understanding of low vision assessment methods

2. Have an understanding of the role that optometry places in the workplace

3. Have an extended understanding of colour vision anomalies, in particular colour vision standards for each profession

4. Be able to demonstrate strategies for prescribing vision aid devices for both low vision and/or occupational purposes

5. Be able to demonstrate strategies for managing the spectrum of low vision disorders

6. Be able to demonstrate strategies for designing and implementation of an ocular health and safety plan in an occupational setting

7. Have an understanding of cash flow, profit and loss and how this affects a small business

8. Understand how to write a marketing plan for business

9. Understand human resource management including recruitment, performance management and setting goals

10. Have the ability to critically analyse research data and draft in a scientific manuscript of publishable quality
