Topic description
In this topic students will gain a theoretical knowledge of key debates in media policy, through a critical examination of key contemporary and historical debates of global media issues.

Issues investigated will include such fundamental areas as digital infrastructure, public service broadcasting, film funding and investment policy, sustainability and cultural industries, ownership, and regulation across media.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with the opportunity to critically analyse key issues and debates in media policy

  • develop a theoretical framework and toolkit for the examination of such debates

  • develop students’ knowledge and understanding of theoretical and policy issues, as it applies to their own screen practice

  • develop skills in the conduct of research, and the presentation of written work
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • critically analyse and communicate key issues and debates in media policy

  • examine a range of issues in application to their own practice

  • synthesise practice and theoretical issues in screen production

  • demonstrate the critical application of academic and industry publications in media policy to their own research
