Topic description

This topic addresses the fundamental principles for those who are, or wish to be, senior clinicians, leading staff, or managing a service in rehabilitation. Contemporary understanding of funding structures for the Australian Health system, models of leadership, evaluation of workplace culture and principles of change management will be explored. Cross-disciplinary skill development relevant for all clinical staff will also be discussed and practiced, including motivational techniques and interprofessional concepts.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Extend the student's cross-disciplinary skills in patient engagement and leadership
  • Introduce models of leadership, the primary concerns of clinical management, and provide supporting material for implementing these skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop and provide justification for strategic organisational goals for the growth, sustainability and accountability of the service
  2. Synthesise current evidence related to models of leadership and management
  3. Demonstrate the application of cross-disciplinary skills including motivational techniques and interprofessional concepts
  4. Develop strategies regarding, and demonstrate the application of appropriate communication of, effective change management principles and reflect upon the delivery of these strategies
