Topic description
Through the presentation of various traumatic brain injury cases, this topic explores the epidemiology, incidence and prevalence, pathology, clinical features, common cognitive and behaviour syndromes, assessment and rehabilitation approaches, subjective experiences and outcomes for those with traumatic brain injury. Associated clinical guidelines will be explored to assist in a critical reflection of practice with this client group.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Increase understanding and clinical reasoning skills for rehabilitation for those with traumatic brain injury and other acquired brain injuries of non-stroke origin

  2. Encourage students to develop the ability to appraise and synthesise current literature and resources in order to apply evidence based practice in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Summarise the clinical features, presentation and prognosis of various types of traumatic brain injury (of non-stroke origin)

  2. Analyse common presentations of cognitive and behavioural concerns and develop clinical strategies to address these

  3. Develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for a client with traumatic brain injury understanding the global rehabilitation needs of this population

  4. Critique and synthesise the literature in a chosen area of traumatic brain injury rehabilitation practice.
