Topic description

This topic addresses key considerations for the rehabilitation of those with a spinal cord injury. Using case studies as a foundation for discussion, we will review the physical complexities of spinal cord injury and the functional and psychosocial impacts upon the individual throughout the continuum of care and beyond.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Discuss key considerations for the rehabilitation of those with spinal cord injury
  • Facilitate critical thinking and clinical reasoning to advance patient centred care for those with a spinal cord injury
  • Explore common functional and psychological presentations of those with a spinal cord injury and provide practical strategies regarding their rehabilitation management
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify the classifications, types and patterns of spinal cord injury
  2. Develop and critically evaluate an interdisciplinary rehabilitation plan for a person with a spinal cord injury
  3. Identify and discuss common physical and psychosocial needs, and potential physiological and functional complications of those with spinal cord injury upon acute presentation and throughout the care continuum
  4. Identify and critically appraise current literature regarding internationally recognised assessment tools and outcome measures within spinal cord injury rehabilitation
