This topic explores rehabilitation for those with dementia acknowledging stigma and exclusion often accompany this highly prevalent condition and public health challenge in Australia. We will explore the course of dementia and incorporate current Australian and global evidence on best practice in dementia care. Recognising rehabilitation has the potential to counterbalance the significant physical and psychosocial impacts of the disease for both the family and caregiver, this topic will provide opportunities for reflection upon practice and service organisation to provide optimal care for this patient group.

This topic aims to:

1. Provide students with current research regarding service provision and interventions in the area of dementia rehabilitation

2. Review the anatomy, physiology and presentations of various types of dementia

3. Introduce students to the concerns and support interventions for the caregivers of those with dementia.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Examine the pathology of the varying types of dementia, the risk factors, presentation and prognosis of dementia, and be able to differentiate between normal ageing and dementia

2. Critically appraise current research regarding the prevention of reactive behaviours and responding to needs, and develop an intervention plan to address these concerns

3. Formulate evidence-based strategies in relation to a case study which aim to support caregivers of those with dementia

4. Synthesise current research regarding the medical and therapeutic management of those with dementia, and evaluate current service provision against this evidence.
