Topic description
This topic will explore the principles of clinical gait analysis, as well as the quantitative analysis of gait and balance, with a focus on neurological conditions. Understanding adaptations and compensation strategies developed by the patient and how these impact rehabilitation as well as every-day life will be addressed.
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  1. Develop students’ understanding of the key principles of clinical gait analysis

  2. Broaden students’ understanding of functional adaptation and compensation strategies in people with neurological gait and balance disorders

  3. Provide an overview of available technologies for the quantitative analysis of gait and balance including traditional and innovative technologies

  4. Review intervention strategies that can be used to improve gait function.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse common neurological gait and balance disorders and compensation techniques, and compare to the normal gait cycle

  2. Interpret objective gait and balance assessment data from a range of sources

  3. Critically evaluate key intervention strategies used in neurological gait rehabilitation and provide sound rationale for the use of technologies in the analysis of gait and balance

  4. Describe the attributes of different wearable technologies and apply sound reasoning to their application in gait rehabilitation.
