Topic description

This topic provides a foundation for the theological study of the nature and mission of the Christian Church, Christian ministries lay and ordained, and the celebration of the Christian sacraments.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Examine the theological study of the nature and mission of the Christian Church, Christian ministries lay and ordained, and to the celebration of the Christian sacraments
  • Develop a critical understanding of students' own religious traditions and a deeper appreciation of traditions other than their own
  • Enhance students' personal participation in religious communities, in leadership and in religious rituals and celebrations
  • Develop skills to allow students to participate in an informed manner, in leadership roles in religious communities
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse critically the major historical developments in the understanding of the Christian Church, its patterns of participation and leadership, and its sacramental practice
  2. Reflect critically on this history and apply to it contemporary Christian thought and practice
  3. Reflect critically on contemporary religious practices
  4. Develop skills for leadership in religious communities
