This topic provides an introduction to quantum physics through the study of various quantum phenomena and their theoretical description using quantum mechanics. Special emphasis is given to spectroscopy as a tool for studying the structure of atoms and molecules, and to the theoretical formulation of quantum mechanics. The material to be taught in this topic will includes: introduction to quantum phenomena, tunnelling, the STM, the rotational and vibrational spectroscopy of diatomic molecules, wave-functions, the uncertainty principle, the Schroedinger equation and its application to 1D and 3D problems and angular momentum.
This topic aims to give students a sound understanding of quantum physics. In addition, it aims to enhance students understanding, while developing their problem solving abilities, by including topic-specific problem solving exercises. Similarly, the students laboratory based work is aimed to both enhance their understanding and to develop their experimental skills.
