This topic focuses on the purposes, philosophies and phenomena of higher education from multiple perspectives. Specific attention is paid to the impact of globalisation on higher education in particular to changing policies and practices, marketization and mobility and the opportunities and challenges these present. The relationship between technology, ideas and people is examined, with a focus on emerging trends and implications. Methodologies used in this topic involve student co-creation of the curriculum, portfolio work and active engaged enquiry.

The aims of this topic are to:

Analyse the purpose of higher education through contemporary and historical perspectives
Evaluate the impact of globalisation on higher education policy and practice
Explore the impact of technology on access, academic work, research, student experience and mobility
Analyse and evaluate the opportunities and challenges presented to higher education institutions, academics and students in contemporary contexts.

It is expected that as a result of work in this topic, students will

Explain the changing nature of higher education through analysing a range of factors, including historical, social, economic and cultural perspectives.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of and exposure to a wide range of research and literature on globalisation and its impact on higher education institutions, academics and students.
Evaluate how globalisation influences higher education policies and practices and work of academics from a local context perspective.
