Topic description
This topic provides students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge of clinical neuroscience in the rehabilitation of those with a neurological condition. Students will complete advanced clinical competencies in relation to neurological and functional assessment, diagnosis of impairment, goal setting, treatment design and implementation, communication and clinical reasoning. A two week full-time placement in Adelaide is required for successful completion of this topic. Placement compliance requirements are an industry pre-requisite for all students entering any health facility, and will be detailed following enrolment in the topic.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Provide students the opportunity to demonstrate and further develop advanced skills in occupational therapy practice for those with a neurological condition

  2. Expose students to contemporary clinical practice and research.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  1. Apply theoretical knowledge of functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology to the development of an intervention plan for those with neurological conditions

  2. Complete a comprehensive assessment of a patient with a neurological condition, formulate and implement an intervention plan incorporating extended theoretical knowledge of motor learning principles, and monitor and evaluate treatment response using reflective clinical reasoning

  3. Demonstrate sensitive and effective communication techniques within the therapeutic relationship and multidisciplinary team

  4. Apply motivational and patient-centred techniques for effectively establishing rehabilitation goals with the patient

  5. Educate colleagues on an area of extended skill development within neurological rehabilitation

  6. Identify areas for future research and service development.
